Large-scale manufacturing enterprises in the United States or to move out of Asia

Recently reported that the face of rising costs of logistics and transportation, the majority of large U.S. manufacturing companies are considering the plant from low cost countries in Asia moved to the United States or Latin America.

Japan's earthquake and tsunami on the global supply chain caused enormous damage, but also highlights a phenomenon that is the absence of international manufacturers of key parts, will be caught in a very passive situation.

For example, glue stick make-up, U.S. automakers General Motors (GeneralMotors) at a Louisiana factory production pickup, due to lack of parts normally supplied by the Japanese plan was recently discontinued.

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing (Boeing) in the 787 Dreamliner (787Dreamliner) more than one third of the parts manufactured by Japanese companies. Boeing said the inventory of parts are still capable of meeting the production needs of the next few weeks, but then can not be guaranteed. Kitchen for the 787 Japanese aircraft manufacturing company warned Jamco status and trends, fuel shortages may affect delivery.

Operating income at the world's largest manufacturer of earthmoving equipment, Caterpillar (Caterpillar),glue gun said the company's factories around the world may be due to interruption of the supply chain in Japan "by the sporadic impact." The company has the original manufactured by Japanese parts suppliers to find alternative sources.

Japan's problems could prompt a large manufacturing company to reassess its global supply chain risk. Accenture this report shows, much before the earthquake, these companies have sought to streamline supply chain, to be closer to end markets.

Accenture's survey of manufacturing executives said that about 61% of the "China Printing Blue Book", was considered by the manufacture and supply departments to migrate to their own or "offshore" (nearshoring) location, so that the supply of and demand for places closer to complement each other.

Accenture is responsible for the performance of process and innovation, managing director Matt Riley (MattReilly) said it will likely trigger a wave of migration of the factory three years the trend of large U.S. manufacturers from the production department will be moved to the United States in Asia and Latin America. Riley said: "Over the past five years, companies interested in pursuing labor cost arbitrage and lower raw material costs."

"But now prices of oil and transportation of Shanghai Electric, productivity benefits are not as large, in addition to the risk of supply chain problems, so companies began to migrate to the location of the customers, instead of select raw materials, location." He said, more customers fast is served and the demand for more customized to promote this shift.

"The dynamic development of manufacturing history of innovation, many are quick to get on the positive customer feedback, and injected into the supply chain functions and features that can quickly change," he said. "If the plant operating in Thailand or Japan, it is difficult to do this."

Other multinational companies also warned that government policies and regulation, their supply chain may be affected by seismic disturbances in Japan, including Sony Ericsson (SonyEricsson), VW (Volkswagen), Volvo (Volvo), and the UK automotive and aerospace parts manufacturer GKN. Japanese companies are actively re-open the domestic factories, but they require all their suppliers are also re-open Caixing. Nissan (Nissan), said the company will be re-opened today the acquisition of five plants, but produces only parts, not assembled vehicle. The production capacity depends on spare parts supply and is located in Fukushima Prefecture (Fukushima) in the sixth manufacturing plant, the plant in close proximity to the first nuclear power plant in Fukushima damaged.

The Accenture study surveyed 287 executives of manufacturing enterprises, the headquarters of most of these enterprises in the United States.
